  • Cancer Clinical Trials and Research

The William N. Pennington Cancer Institute is dedicated to find the causes of cancer and develop better treatments. We research a wide variety of areas. We perform traditional research in the laboratory and translational research with patients, and we look at how we provide counseling and support and clinical trials, in which patients have the option to try new therapies. We partner with research institutions, including local researchers at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) and the Desert Research Institute (DRI), national and international researchers, non-profit organizations, and industry to help drive discoveries forward quickly. Cancer Clinical Trials & Research Participating in cancer clinical trials and research allows you to receive the most effective therapy available. These treatments investigate promising new drugs, drug combinations, advances in personalized care, and new approaches to surgery or radiation therapy otherwise unavailable. To join a clinical trial, talk to a member of your cancer care team. They will know about any current trials for your type of cancer, explain your role in the preparation, and provide information about your protection. Trial participants usually receive the therapy at little or no cost. If you are considering a trial, consult with your primary care doctor. At Renown Institute for Cancer, we want to provide our patients with the opportunity to access novel treatments through participation in clinical trials. For adult patients, we offer clinical trials through the National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP). Dr. Garrett Green, Renown Health department of Radiation Oncology, serves as the Principal Investigator and Liaison for the adult oncology team. For specific information on which trials are currently available at our institution, please call us at 775-982-5050. For children, we offer clinical trials including phase 2 and phase 3 studies through the Children's Oncology Group. Dr. J. Martin Johnston, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Renown Children's Hospital and Senior Investigator, Renown Institute for Cancer, is the Principal Investigator. The Cancer Research Team As the most extensive healthcare system in northern Nevada and eastern California, and in partnership with clinical trial sponsors, the National Cancer Institute, and the Nevada Cancer Research Foundation, we can access dozens of open clinical trials. We are here to provide education and guidance in making decisions about your care and treatment. Our specially trained research teams will help you understand the process and explain what to expect with each visit. We are committed to bringing the highest quality of cancer care to you and your loved ones. To learn more about open clinical trials, please reach out to us with this form.

  • Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer Screening & Prevention In the United States, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. While the exact causes of prostate cancer are still unknown, certain risk factors are linked to the disease, increasing a person's chance of developing prostate cancer. Risk Factors Age: Men over 50 are at more risk. Race: For unknown reasons, prostate cancer is more common in African American Men. Family history: Men with a first-degree relative (father/brother) are more likely to be diagnosed. Prevalence in the family: Men with one first-degree relative should talk to their doctor about prostate cancer screening by age 45; men with multiple family members diagnosed should speak with their doctor by age 40. Diet: A diet high in red meat, dairy products, and saturated fat may increase the risk for prostate cancer. If you are concerned about prostate cancer because you meet one or more risk factors, talk to your doctor about a screening. Screening Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test The prostate gland naturally produces a protein called prostate-specific antigen (PSA). However, higher-than-normal levels of PSA can be an indication of a problem with the prostate gland. These problems could range from prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) to prostate cancer. To test for PSA levels, doctors administer a blood test. The results are measured in nanograms of PSA per milliliter of blood. The higher the patient's PSA per ng/mL, the more likely he is to have prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor about when you should begin PSA screenings. Digital Rectal Exam Men with a high PSA reading accompanied by other symptoms of prostate cancer may also have a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE). During this exam, the doctor will insert a gloved, lubricated finger (digit) into the rectum to check for enlargement of or growths on the prostate.

Polyps can develop in the colon or rectum and become malignant without presenting any symptoms. Therefore, knowing and addressing your risk factors and undergoing the recommended screenings is crucial. Colorectal cancer affects both men and women. Even if you have no personal or family history of colon cancer, ask your doctor about colorectal risk factors and when to start screening. • Cherie Elvin Memorial Fund Scholarship

The Cherie Elvin Memorial Fund was created by the Elvin Family as a legacy to honor their mother, Cherie, who died at the 2011 Reno Air Races. Throughout her life, Cherie cared for her family in so many different ways. The care the family received from the physicians, nurses, and other care providers from all area hospitals and EMS teams along with the support they received from the community has inspired the Elvin Family to fund two scholarships to individuals wanting to become Registered Nurses in the Reno-Sparks area. Each scholarship will be valued at $2,500 and awarded to applicants who are committed to working at the bedside and convey the fundamental qualities of a nurse and how they will connect with their patients recovering from traumatic situations.
